BTCC 2026: Donington Delivered Drama and the Season Is Already Taking Shape

BTCC Vertu

The 2026 British Touring Car Championship season is officially underway, and the opening weekend at Donington Park delivered exactly what BTCC fans expected. Close racing, controversy, surprise performances, and championship drama immediately set the tone for what could become one of the strongest touring car seasons in recent years.

With the next race weekend approaching at Brands Hatch, the early title picture is already beginning to form.

Performances: Sutton and Ingram Set the Pace

Ash Sutton once again looks like the benchmark driver heading into the early stages of the season. Despite setbacks during Saturday’s new qualifying race format, Sutton recovered brilliantly across Sunday to secure multiple victories and immediately establish himself as the championship favourite. His ability to cut through traffic and manage tyre wear looked stronger than anyone else on the grid.

The NAPA Racing Ford Focus package also appeared extremely balanced over race distance. Straight line speed, consistency, and tyre management all looked competitive at Donington, which will concern rival teams heading into Brands Hatch.

Tom Ingram also showed championship level pace throughout the opening weekend. Although his Race 1 disqualification for an overboost infringement prevented a stronger points haul, Hyundai still looked quick over a single lap and during race stints. Ingram’s aggressive style and consistency remain major strengths, and he already appears Sutton’s biggest threat in the early standings.

New Teams and New Cars Are Already Competitive

One of the most encouraging signs from Donington was the immediate competitiveness of several new team packages.

Cataclean Plato Racing’s Mercedes A35 saloon made a strong debut weekend. Dan Rowbottom secured victory in the new Saturday “Race to Pole” event, giving the team an early statement result and proving the Mercedes platform already has front running pace.

Power Maxed Racing’s Audi A3 also impressed during long race runs. Both Aiden Moffat and Dexter Patterson spent significant time fighting inside the top positions, suggesting the Audi package could become one of the surprise contenders of the season.

The variety across the grid already feels stronger than previous years. Ford, Hyundai, BMW, Toyota, Mercedes, and Audi all demonstrated genuine competitiveness during the opening round.

Young Drivers Continue Rising Through the Grid

BTCC’s next generation also made a strong early impression.

Charles Rainford looked particularly impressive for WSR BMW throughout the weekend. The young driver raced aggressively while remaining composed under pressure, immediately positioning himself as one of the breakout names of the opening round.

The championship continues benefiting from younger drivers arriving from British GT, endurance racing, and junior single seater categories. That crossover is strengthening the overall depth of the grid and helping BTCC maintain its reputation as one of Europe’s most competitive domestic championships.

Several teams are now clearly investing in long term development rather than relying entirely on experienced veterans, which could significantly shape the future direction of the series over the next few years.

The New BTCC Weekend Format Is Already Dividing Opinion

The biggest talking point away from pure racing remains the introduction of the new Saturday qualifying race format.

The “Race to Pole” system created more action across the weekend and immediately added pressure to qualifying sessions. However, some fans criticised the format for artificially influencing Sunday grids and increasing the risk of unnecessary contact before the main races had even started.

Tyre strategy also became far more important under the revised structure. Teams now have less margin for error across practice and qualifying, while Goodyear’s tyre allocations already appear to be playing a much bigger role in overall race strategy.

Whether fans fully embrace the new format remains unclear, but it has undeniably made BTCC weekends feel more intense from the very start.

Looking Ahead to Brands Hatch

Brands Hatch should provide a much clearer indication of the real championship order.

The shorter Indy layout rewards confidence under braking, aggressive overtaking, and strong qualifying pace. That should suit Sutton once again, although BMW and Hyundai traditionally perform strongly there too.

Momentum matters heavily in BTCC because the field is so competitive. After Donington, Sutton has early control, Ingram has unfinished business, and several new teams suddenly believe they can compete for podiums consistently.

If the opening round is any indication, the 2026 BTCC season could already be shaping into a classic championship battle.
